The introduction to ERW(Electric Resistance Welding)tube mill line process

What is an ERW tube?

“ERW tube” is straight seam Resistance Welding pipe, or Electric Resistance Welding, abbreviated as ERW, used for conveying oil, natural gas and other vapor liquid objects, can meet various requirements of high and low pressure, in the world’s transportation pipe field plays a pivotal role. Electric Resistance Welding (ERW) tube mill is manufactured from cold-formed steel sheets in a cylindrical shape. An electric current is then passed between the two edges of the steel to heat the steel to a point where the edges are forced together to form a bond without the use of welding filler material.

Resistance welded (ERW) tubes are one of the most versatile tools in the industry. However, the ERW pipeline is only one of many pipeline types available. It is important to understand the differences between each pipe type so that you can choose the right pipe.

Resistance welded (ERW) tubes are manufactured from cold-formed steel sheets in a cylindrical shape. An electric current is then passed between the two edges of the steel to heat the steel to a point where the edges are forced together to form a bond without the use of welding filler material. Initially, the manufacturing process used low-frequency ALTERNATING current to heat the edges. This low-frequency treatment was used from the 1920s until 1970. In 1970, low frequency welding was replaced by high frequency welding, resulting in higher quality welds.

The introduction to ERW(Electric Resistance Welding) process

The term ERW refers to a special type of welding process, including spot and seam welding. Weld welding is a common welding method in the manufacture of round, square and rectangular steel tubes. The steel strip is unrolled from the coil and trimmed to the side to control the width and weld edges. The strip is then passed through a series of profile rollers to cool the formation of the material into a round (square or rectangular) shape. The edges are forced together under pressure to act as butt joints and are then welded by heating the material to temperatures above 2000° F. The flash weld that has been formed is now removed from the outer diameter of the tube. Once the weld has been tested on the tube, it is then passed through a series of sizing rollers to obtain its precise finished dimensions, after which the tube is straightened and cut to length.

Rolled and welded tubes are profiles made from steel plates that are rolled into cans. The joints of the tanks are welded, and then the individual tanks are welded together to make the finished tube. Rolled and welded tubes can be up to 16 feet in diameter and more than 2.0 inches thick.

Several advantages of ERW tube:

No fusion metal is used in the manufacturing process. This means the pipes are very strong and durable.

Welds cannot be seen or felt. This is a major difference when looking at the double submerged arc welding process, which produces a distinct pass that may need to be eliminated.

With advances in high-frequency current for welding, the welding process has become simpler and safer.

With the passage of time, it is found that the weld of low-frequency war welded pipe is prone to selective weld corrosion, hook crack and inadequate weld bonding, so the low-frequency war welded pipe is no longer used to manufacture pipelines. The high-frequency process is still used to manufacture pipes for new pipeline construction.
