Metals Processing Cold Roll Forming: Advantages of Cold Rolled Steel

In News by TXadminLeave a Comment

In order to obtain high-quality products, metal processing requires many steps. Steel is an alloy made of iron and carbon, which is durable, sustainable and required by many industries. Formal specifications and different grades of steel will affect the performance and use of metal, but there are other technologies that can change the strength and finish during metal processing. In this article, we will focus on a technology called cold roll forming and cold rolled steel.

What is cold rolling technology?

“Cold rolling” refers to the process that steel goes through before it becomes the final product. Cold rolled steel, sometimes abbreviated as CRS, is known for its extremely high ductility and is ideal for applications requiring precision. It is used in many applications, such as home appliances, furniture, lockers and filing cabinets. In architectural applications, CRS is usually used to build garages, steel sheds and other industrial buildings.

The temperature is not what we call “cold”. Instead, the whole process is carried out at room temperature and puts a lot of pressure on the steel. However, this does not mean that cold-rolled steel will never experience its recrystallization temperature. In fact, cold-rolled steel can withstand extreme temperatures and pressure rolls like hot-rolled steel. Cold rolled steel only needs to go through more processes after cooling to obtain accurate dimensions and better surface quality. In many cases, steel may undergo processes such as rolling, turning, grinding and polishing.

Advantages of cold-rolled steel

Cold-rolled steel has many advantages, such as increased strength. Compared with other types of steel, the compression of steel at room temperature will harden the strain, so that the metal has significant strength. That said, steel has no unnecessary thickness to produce this strength. Cold rolling allows for tighter tolerances not found in other steel manufacturing. In other words, the metal will have thinner walls without sacrificing integrity.

One of the most desirable aspects of cold rolled steel is its beauty. Cold rolling process metal processors can improve surface finish. If the project needs visual appeal, it will leave a smooth surface with few defects. However, a good surface is not only great for its beauty. Cold rolled steel is used to build bridges because there are fewer visible surface defects.

Application of cold rolled steel

In addition, cold rolled steel is well suited for projects that require greater accuracy and durability. The bars made by this technology have fine edges, very straight pipes and excellent concentricity uniformity.

Cold rolled steel can be found in many industries today. It is used in household appliances, roof and wall systems, metal furniture, and aerospace structural components, and has a wide range of applications. Although there are many steps in the cold rolling process, the manufacturing time of cold rolled steel is very short and can be delivered in time, so customers can start their projects quickly.

How does the cold rolling mill machine work?

The process of cold rolling metal alloys begins with metal sheets or coils. These materials are placed in a large roller and compressed and extruded under high pressure slightly below their ultimate tensile strength. Different mechanical properties and hardness properties can be obtained in the finished product according to the different compression amount. Through cold rolling, the thickness of metal can be reduced through a series of tandem mill stands. The drums on these supports are stacked vertically and driven by huge motors. The motor works hard to exert extreme compression on the metal.

These mills roll hot-rolled and pickled products into coils and pass them to make them thinner. Once the metal passes through the roll and reaches the required thickness, it is rolled but is not fully ready for use. During this process, the metal is still in a highly cold worked state, which may be brittle despite its high strength. It needs to be annealed at a higher temperature to soften the steel, so it is not too difficult to machine. After annealing, the metal is easier to use in many applications because it can be bent and formed.
