In the metal process working, every new contract is a new bespoke challenge. The increased demand for coils with finer width and length parameters has ushered in an era of more powerful precision slitting — driven by technological advances in slitting equipment, software and tool practices. Before introducing slitting, let’s first explain what is coil.
Coil, a finished steel product, such as a sheet or strip, that is wound or coiled after rolling.
Steel coils are usually used for efficient handling, transportation and further processing. The coil is used by manufacturers of processing equipment such as food processing equipment, home alliances, medical equipment, construction and building products, offshore drilling platforms, chemical and pharmaceutical equipment, water storage and processing, heating and energy.
What is coil slitting?
Coil slitting is a shearing process in which the width of a primary or main coil is reduced to multiple narrower coils. This is usually called stripping. The steel strip is a flat coil product with a width of less than 600mm for hot rolled products and less than 500mm for cold-rolled products. Wider flat products are called wide strip products.
Strip steel is used in various industrial applications. Typically, strip steel is used for body panels and automotive parts, plumbing, appliances (such as refrigerators, washers and dryers), construction materials, and electrical components.
What is the slitting line?
The slitting line is a metal manufacturing process in which a coil of material, such as aluminum or steel, is sewn to a specified length and width for the final application. As the material passes through the machine, the steel coil is moved through very sharp round blades that make the cut. In order to slice, a considerable compressive force must be applied — when the pressure exceeds the tensile strength of the material, it is sliced. The end product is a long strip of material cut to the buyer’s specifications.
What is the steel slitting machine?
Steel slitting machine is composed of three main parts: uncoiler, slitting machine and winding machine. To ensure that the quality of the process is optimized, each element must be precisely aligned during setup.
Steel is an alloy of iron, mixed with carbon to improve its strength and durability. Combine these features with its low cost, and you have an alloy that is well suited for a variety of end applications, including (but not limited to) automotive, infrastructure, and appliance /HVAC.
Introduction of the steel slitting line process
Steel slitting is a steel manufacturing process in which steel coils are slit into lengths and widths specified by the final application. This process requires mechanical production lines with uncoiler, slitter and rewind machines to achieve the final product: slitting steel coils, or “mults.”
Steel slitting process workflow
Unprocessed steel reels go through the slitting process, ending with rewinding to create three perfect slitting reels from the original large reels. The slitting line operator feeds the coil to the uncoiler spindle. The uncoiler unrolls the main reel and feeds it into the slitting head, where the steel is cut into narrow strips with a rotary knife. The operator then checks the individual mults to ensure that the gauge width and edge conditions meet the required specifications. The slitting coil is then passed through an annular pit to ensure no stress and no backwash of the bending crack material. The individual hybrids are then combined and packaged to specific customer requirements.
