What is stretch leveling?
Stretch leveling is the process of fully stretching the material beyond the yield point of all the fibers, balancing the internal trapped stress. This activity produces a material that remains flat even after laser cutting, cutting, punching, or subsequent shearing operations. Eliminating stress rebound after cutting makes additional processes such as welding and shaping easier while tempering through is a process of applying a lot of pressure to compress the steel. During leveling, two rolling pins move along the length of the plate/sheet, extruding the internal stress.
Stretch levelers use a series of electronically driven levelers that flatten and reduce the crossbow (curvature) before it continues to stretch. On the stretcher, the jig grabs 40 feet of material and applies 2 million pounds of force to evenly stretch the material past its yield point. Stretch leveling removes all internal stress, eliminating the risk of spring rebound after cutting, unlike temper through.
