What is the coil slitting line?

Coil slitting line, also known as steel coil slitting line, is a production line designed to cut wide coils of metal to the desired width or length with quick tool change systems, uncoiler, and uncoiler systems. Using high precision cutting tools, usually circular slitters and tool replacement systems, coil slitting is not only reliable and flexible to use steel and various metal coils.

How does the coil slitting line work?

As mentioned above, the slitting line involves three parts: de-coiler, slitter, and re-coiler, which can optimize the quality of slitting wide coil products. During the production cycle, the unwinding machine loads and flattens the coils to eliminate surface defects, and then feeds them through a clamp mounted between the circular scutters in the upper and lower layers. The longitudinal sewn to width coils are then rewound by a rewinding machine.

  1. Uncoiling:

In an uncoiler, the uncoiling process begins with the loading of a metal coil or main coil into a device, which may be a double cone form or an expansion mandrel with a single end. The biconical uncoiler is better suited for heavier loads, while the mandrel type is suitable for light and heavy-duty applications.

The raw material is loaded into the cone of the unwinding machine through the pushing ramp and the fast coiling car. When loading, insert single end mandrel thread into the inner diameter of the main ring. The material is punctured from the cone or mandrel and then peeled to ensure that the coil head enters the edge guide smoothly before passing through a straightener or other type of straightener. If in further operation, surface flatness and free of defects is crucial.

2. Slitting:

During the cutting length phase, the material is fed into a slitting machine consisting of two parallel shafts fitted with rotating knives. The slitting tool will partially enter the coil material, resulting in cracks or fracture on both sides of the metal material. At this stage, the multiple populations will separate from each other. Depending on the thickness of the coil, rubber peel rings are used to obtain a better edge and prevent any burrs that could affect product quality and downstream operation.

When the blank is accurately cut, the outer edge of the metal has an edge trim, which will be treated by the sheet winder. On the other hand, if the workpiece to be cut is very thin, the operator can use an annular pit that occupies different thicknesses of the coil being cut when the edge area is thinner than the central part. In addition, this circulating pit can take extra volume from the coil that is fed into the tensioning device.

The tension device in the coiling production line is usually the tension rack in front of the rewinding machine. Since the diameter of the main coil is larger in the centre of the width than in the edge region, this is required in the coil tangents. Therefore, the stock from the central area of the mainline coil will be taken faster because the other areas are hanging loosely without tensioning devices.

3. Recoiling:

In general, reels use the expansion mandrel form in coil tangents, which can mainly be extended from diameters of 20 “to 24” or more expansion pads or blades. The device recoils stitched to the width of the coil when matched with the detached disc arm shaft. The placement of the disc directly with the scutters can prevent any crossover problems of the narrow coil stock. The finished product will then be bent on the outer diameter, forcing it from the mandrel to the coil car.
